Sex, Gender ‘n’ Demons – The Final Instalment

If you’ve made it this far, I’m proud of you. Introducing the last part of my half baked ramblings.

Part 3: Sexuality

A part of me considered breaking this section into two separate parts, but then I’d have four posts and that does not sit well with my brain. So, Part 3A, I guess.

A succubus will feed from a man regardless of his sexuality. If her meal likes other men, she’ll adopt the visage of his perfect man and get the show going. The same is true for an incubus, he’ll look any part necessary to fit his target’s desires. Where things get tricky is when they run into people who don’t experience sexual attraction.

If someone is asexual or demisexual, they can’t be manipulated by a succubus or an incubus regardless of their gender. Maybe, under very specific circumstances, a succubus could feed from an ace man if he wasn’t sex-repulsed, but she wouldn’t be able to use her magic in the process. She can’t weaponise a desire that isn’t there. She would have to feed from him as herself, with no glamour, no pretty human mask, just her in all her demonic glory.

Does this make a non-binary asexual the perfect thing to be in my world? Yes, yes it does. Until you’re eaten by a vampire or found by a witch who wants to siphon your energy for their own uses.

Moving into Part 3B, there’s the obvious question of the sexuality of the demon. We know Kyra, my succubus main character, is a lesbian. She doesn’t like men, at all. She feeds from men and uses their desire to this end, but she has no interest in actually being sexual with a man. This actually puts her at a disadvantage as a succubus in some ways. Because she finds men sexually repellent (her words, not mine), she needs to concentrate a little harder in keeping a balancing act of focusing on her magic and the desires of her meal, and keeping herself distanced enough that her distaste doesn’t show through. Kyra is also her own worst enemy because she’d rather choose meals that reinforce her internal bias against men than work to achieve a healthier relationship with her food.

On the other hand, we have Damian, an asexual incubus who is largely sex ambivalent. He doesn’t have any desire to pursue it, but he’s far from repulsed. For Damian, it’s just a means to an end, a source of fuel, a part of his job, nothing more. Where Kyra struggles against her sexuality, Damian has had to learn to harness his. Because when you’re using sex as a weapon but have no concept of it’s strength, you can accidentally bring a nuclear weapon to a knife fight. Damian has no connection, or even real concept, of the lust he wields and has broken a few brains in the process of learning control.

In general, succubi and incubi are pretty fluid in terms of sexuality and sex. I guess they’d be the poster children for omnisexuality. Deviating from this standard is often frowned upon, but will be excused as long as they do their part to support the continuation of their species. The only real hard and fast rule they have as a society is that they’re meant to be aromantic. Sex outside of feeding is fine, but creating romantic bonds? That’s a big no no. You can’t be trusted to do your duty if you’re attached to someone, or a few someones. Unfortunately, Kyra has never been too good at bending to the social expectations of others.

Now believe me when I say I never expected to be writing a blog on the demonic birds and bees of my world. I never really pictured myself putting so much thought into things like children and the maintenance of a species. But after some pointed questions from my editor and some back tracking on my own thought processes, I have it mostly planned out. These posts barely scratch the surface of all the thoughts and ideas floating in the back of my mind, but they’re a good start.
